Low growth in telecom

There was a low growth in turnover within telecommunications from 2007 to 2008. The industry had a total turnover of NOK 64.4 billion in 2008, up 2.8 per cent from 2007. The growth in employment was somewhat lower, at 2.1 per cent. The 689 enterprises employed 13 476 persons collectively.

At the same time, the prices of telecommunication services fell. Hence growth in volume was higher than growth in turnover. The two largest industry groups within telecommunications were wired telecommunications and wireless telecommunications. Wired telecommunications was the larger of the two in terms of number of enterprises, persons employed and turnover. The turnover in 2008 was NOK 31.5 billion; 3.5 per cent up from the previous year. A total of 9 118 persons were employed in 345 enterprises. The growth in turnover within wireless telecommunications was lower, at only 1 per cent. Employment however, rose by 8.2 per cent. The 3 128 employees totalled a turnover of NOK 27.5 billion in 2008. This amounts to NOK 8.8 million per employee, down 6.6 per cent from the previous year. Nevertheless, this was the highest turnover per employee within all of the industry division Information and communication.

Turnover within computer programming; consultancy and related activities was NOK 51.6 billion in 2008. This was up as much as 9.9 per cent from 2007. The prices also rose from 2007 to 2008. A total of 32 191 people were employed in this industry division; 6.1 per cent more than in 2007. Turnover per employee was NOK 1.6 million, up 3.6 per cent.

Turnover up 10 per cent within programming and broadcasting activities

The enterprises within programming and broadcasting services had zero growth in employment but turnover was up 10.3 per cent. A total of 5 906 employees in 191 enterprises had a turnover of NOK 9.4 billion in 2008. The publishing industry had a turnover of just above NOK 43 billion and enterprises within motion picture, video and television programme production, sound recording and music publishing activities, had a turnover just short of NOK 7.3 billion. These industries employed 24 587 and 4 027 respectively. The smallest industry within Information and communication is information service activities, with a turnover of NOK 5.8 billion. This is 2.3 per cent more than in 2007. Employment however, was 0.8 per cent lower than the previous year. A total of 3 698 persons worked in 1 193 enterprises.

Preliminary figures

The preliminary figures for number of enterprises, turnover and employment are published while data are still being revised and may therefore deviate somewhat from final figures published at a later date. While preliminary figures are published on the enterprise level only, final figures are published on both the enterprise level and the local kind-of-activity unit level.

Important announcement: Transition to a new industry classification

A new version of the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC2007) was implemented in January 2009. The structural business statistics for the reference year 2008 are published according to both the new and previous standard. Figures for 2007 will also be published according to the new standard.
