The number of private broadband subscriptions with fixed access, including Svalbard, has increased by 18 000 from the third to the fourth quarter of 2016, and 60 000 compared to the fourth quarter of 2015. Seven per cent of the private broadband subscriptions have a transmission capacity greater than 128 Mbit/s. 

In total, the calculated broadband penetration rate in the fourth quarter of 2016 is 84 per cent, compared to 81 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2015. 

The increase in broadband capacity continues

The average transmission capacity for fixed private broadband has increased by 36 per cent to 47.0 Mbit/s in the fourth quarter of 2016 compared to the same quarter in 2015. In the third quarter of 2016, the average transmission capacity was 44.8 Mbit/s. The average transmission capacity for fixed business broadband has increased by 23 per cent to 26.6 Mbit/s in the fourth quarter of 2016 compared to the same quarter in 2015. 

The median value for fixed private broadband has increased from 26.9 to 27.7 Mbit/s from the third to the fourth quarter of 2016. Compared to the fourth quarter 2015, the median value has increased by 11 per cent. The median value for business broadband has increased to 14.3 Mbit/s compared to 11.2 Mbit/s in the fourth quarter of 2015.

New definition of householdsOpen and readClose

From the 4th quarter of 2014, household figures from 1 January 2014 are used. The general increase in population and households reduces the penetration rate for private broadband by 1.5 percentage points. Additionally, another 1.5 pp reduction is caused by a new way of treating students. Even unmarried students are now registered in households at the place they study.
