Lowest one-year increase in fixed broadband

The increase from the 1st quarter of 2014 to the 1st quarter of 2015 in fixed broadband subscriptions is the lowest ever registered since this survey started in 2002. The rapid increase in fixed broadband capacity continued in the 1st quarter of 2015.

The number of private broadband subscriptions with fixed access in Norway, including Svalbard, was 1 853 000 at the end of the 1st quarter of 2015. Compared to the same quarter last year, this is an increase of 42 000 subscriptions.

The increase in private broadband capacity continues

The average transmission capacity for fixed private broadband has increased from 28.3 to 29.9 Mbit/s since the previous quarter. At the same time, the median value has increased to 21.0 Mbit/s from 20.4 in the previous quarter. One year ago, the average transmission capacity was 19.2 Mbit/s and the median value was 11.1 Mbit/s.

The average transmission capacity for fixed business broadband has increased to 18.2 from 16.8 Mbit/s in the previous quarter. At the same time, the median value increased to 8.6 Mbit/s compared to 7.7 in the previous quarter.

Private broadband subscriptions with a capacity of more than 32 Mbit/s total 33 per cent. Among business broadband subscriptions, 12 per cent have this capacity.

Slow increase in penetration rates

In total, the calculated broadband penetration rate in the 1st quarter of 2014 is 78.8 per cent, compared to 78.5 per cent in the previous quarter. The figure for private broadband subscriptions per 100 households varies between 86 per cent in the county of Oslo and 68 per cent in the county of Finnmark.

From the 4th quarter of 2014, household figures from 1 January 2014 are used. The general increase in population and households reduces the penetration rate for private broadband by 1.5 percentage points. Additionally, a new way of treating students has led to a further 1.5 pp reduction. Even unmarried students are now registered in households at the place they study.
