New household definition results in drop in penetration rates

The broadband penetration rate in private households cannot be compared directly to previous quarters since the way in which students are calculated in household statistics has changed. Half of the increase in household figures compared to the previous quarter was a result of this change. In total, the calculated broadband penetration rate in the 4th quarter of 2014 is 78.5 per cent, compared to 81 per cent in the pervious quarter. The figure for private broadband subscriptions per 100 households varies between 86 per cent in the county of Oslo and 67 per cent in the county of Finnmark.

From the 4th quarter of 2014, household figures from 1 January 2014 are used. The general increase in population and households reduces the penetration rate for private broadband by 1.5 percentage points. Additionally, a change in the way students are calculated entails a further reduction of 1.5 percentage points. Unmarried students are also now registered in households at the place they study.
