Large increace in expences

Statistics Norway's new accounts and personnel statistics in StatRes show that the total cost of The Correctional Service increased by 11 per cent from 2006 to 2007. The number of man-years increades by 5 per cent.

The total cost of The Correctional Service was 2.7 billion NOK i 2007. A total of 73 per cent of the costs constituted wages (including pension costs), while 27 per cent was linked to the purchase of goods and services.

Compared to earlier published statistics for the police and prosecution, the statistics shows that it has been a larger increase in the expenses to The Correctional Service, than the police and prosecution. The expenses for the police and prosecution increased 6 per cent from 2006 to 2007, and 12 per cent from 2005 to 2007. In the same period the expenses for The Correctional service increased by 11 and 18 percent.

3 800 man-years in The Correctional Service

The statistics for contracted man-years, adjusted for long-term leaves (sick leave recommended by a doctor and leave of absence to care for a child), show that there were 3 821 man-years in The Correctional Service in 2007. This represents a 7 per cent increase from 2005.

The Correctional Service in StatRes

The Correctional Service in StatRes’s definition encompasses the  six  Regional Administrations and all subordinate units of the Service (prisons and probation offices), The Correctional Service of Norway Staff Academy (KRUS) and The Correctional Service’s IT Centre (KITT).

The indicator-set for the Norwegian Correctional Service’s area in StatRes is currently under development. In the long term this will be supplemented with several new and more detailed indicators. The publication in 2008 includes a limited number of main indicators from Statistics Norway's statistics on costs and contracted man-years adjusted for long-term leaves. The costs and contracted man-years statistics are new and have been specially developed by Statistics Norway for publishing in StatRes (Further explanations can be found in “About the statistics”).
