Manufacturing prices somewhat down

From February to March the prices in the group manufacturing, mining and quarrying went down 0.3 per cent. This fall was mainly due to lower prices of refined petroleum products. The 12-month rate (March 2000 - March 2001) was 3.1 per cent.

Together with a 4.2 per cent fall in the group oil and gas extraction this caused the total index to decrease by 2.3 per cent from the previous month, giving a negative 12-month rate.

The prices of refined petroleum products went down by 4.3 per cent. The groups basic metals and rubber and plastic products also contributed to the fall in manufacturing prices. The largest contributor in the opposite direction came from food, beverages and tobacco, where the prices rose by one per cent. Increasing prices were also registered in the groups other non-metallic mineral products and machinery and equipment n.e.c.

Of the main industrial groupings energy goods have shown the largest change, with a decrease of 2.5 per cent. There was also a decline in the prices of intermediate goods, while the prices of consumer-and capital goods rose.
