Prices of energy goods increased

Manufacturing prices rose by 0.2 per cent from July to August. Prices of oil and electricity continue to increase and the total index went up by 2.5 per cent from July.

Prices within oil and gas extraction went up by 5 per cent from last month and about 17 per cent since May. Figures from London Spot Market showed a 6.6 per cent increase in August prices of crude oil (Brend Blend measured in NOK). Electricity prices went up by 11.8 per cent in August, after an 8.1 per cent increase in July.

Manufacturing prices increased slightly compared with last month. Most subgroups showed an increase, the largest occurring in refined petroleum products where prices went up by 2.4 per cent. Non-ferrous metals increased by 2.2 per cent. The overall rise was counteracted by a 0.5 per cent decrease in prices of food. Textiles, clothes and wood processing also showed a decline.

According to the main industrial groupings energy goods went up by 5 per cent from July to August, while consumer goods went down 0.4 per cent.

Manufacturing prices are up by 3 per cent compared with last August. The largest increase came in refined petroleum products, where prices went up by 11.5 per cent. Prices of basic metals have increased by 9.6 per cent the last 12 months, while the corresponding figure last month was 5.9 per cent. Chemicals have gone up by 7.4 per cent.

Of the main industrial groupings - energy goods have increased by 9.8 per cent. Intermediate goods went up by 3.5 per cent, while consumer goods have increased by 0.2 per cent the last 12 months.

Commodity price index for industrial sectors

As announced previously the articles for the Producer price index and the Commodity price index for the industrial sectors are now coordinated. The web pages for both surveys will remain the same for the time being - www.ssb.no/ppi_en and www.ssb.no/vppi_en.

The monthly and the 12-month rate for the surveys showed no differences in August. Therefore no new information is added about the commodity price index.

One decimal from January 2004

Starting with the publishing of January figures all indices will be produced with one decimal. Two decimals give an exaggerated impression of the accuracy of the estimates. In addition we want to harmonize the indices with common practice - where one decimal is used.
