Revised producer price index

Work renewing the producer price index is finished. New methods and sources of data have been utilised to improve quality. A new industrial classification makes it easier to compare figures with those of other short-term statistics. New reference year will be 2000.

For more information about the revision see "About the statistics", where the most important changes are presented.

Manufacturing prices down

Manufacturing prices declined by 1.2 per cent from December 2000 to January 2001. The 12-month rate (January 2000 - January 2001) went from 6.7 per cent to 4.9 per cent. The greatest contribution to the decline was weakened prices of refined petroleum products and basic metals.

Prices of fabricated metal products showed a 1.4 per cent increase, while prices of chemicals and chemical products increased by 1.5 per cent.

The total index decreased by 4.7 per cent from December to January. The greatest contribution to this fall came from a 7.7 per cent price reduction in the group oil and gas extraction.

Among the main industrial groupings non-durable consumer goods declined by 0.4 per cent from last month. Energy goods went down 7.2 per cent, while intermediate goods declined 0.5 per cent.
