Prices of metals down

The total index increased by 0.2 per cent from May to June. The effect from decreasing metal prices was counteracted by a continued increase in the prices of crude oil and refined oil products. The 12-month rate (June 1999 - June 2000) increased from 8.0 to 8.3 per cent.

Even though OPEC this month decided to increase their production by 708 000 barrels a day, the average price of Brent Blend increased by more than 2.5 per cent from May to June (measured in NOK). It is indicated that the market had expected a larger increase in production. The prices in the group oil extraction, mining and quarrying increased by 1.3 per cent. The 12-month rate went down from 46.4 to 45.7 per cent.

Small increase in manufacturing prices

In the group manufacture of chemicals and chemical petroleum, coal, rubber and plastic products the prices increased by 1.3 per cent. This was mainly due to rising prices of refined oil products for exports. An increase in prices of exports is also a reason for the 1.1 per cent increase in the group manufacture of paper and paper products, printing and publishing. The prices in the group food, beverages and tobacco also showed a moderate increase from May to June. In the group manufacture of basic metals the prices decreased by 4.1 per cent from May to June. On the London Metal Exchange the average price of nickel dropped by roughly 19 per cent in June (measured in NOK). The price of aluminium fell by more than 3 per cent.

In the other groups there were only minor changes. The overall increase in manufacturing prices from May to June was 0.1 per cent. The 12-month rate rose from 4.8 per cent in May to 5.1 per cent in June.
