Total index up 1.9 per cent

The index more than recovered after the decline in April. This is mainly due to an approximately 29 per cent increase in the Brent Blend oil price. The increase from May 1999 to May 2000 is 8 per cent, after 6.2 per cent in April.

The 5.1 per cent USD / NOK exchange rate increase explains a part of the oil price rise measured in NOK. Furthermore, signals from the oil ministers in some of the main oil exporting nations indicates that they are content with the current price level, and that there are no plans to increase production. The 12-month rate of oil and natural gas went up 54.1 per cent from last May compared with the corresponding 34.5 per cent in April.

Increase in manufacturing prices

The industry's prices increased by 0.6 per cent from April to May after declining 0.3 previous period. Likewise, the 12-month rate increased from 4.4 per cent to 4.8 per cent. This is mainly due to the increase in prices of refined oil products and non-ferrous metals. The export prices had the most important contribution to this change. E.g. the aluminium prices at the London spot market increased by 6.6 per cent when measured in NOK. The prices within the group production of metals, increased by 3.2 per cent from April to Mai, after a 0.3 per cent decline the preceding period.

The group chemical products of mineral oil, coal, rubber and plastic increased by 1.1 per cent in May. The 12-month increase rose from 16.7 per cent previous period till 18.2 per cent in May.
