The price index of first-hand domestic sales (PIF) for all commodity groups was 147.2 in April (with 2000=100). Compared with March, the total index fell by 0.2 per cent. The reduction was mainly due to lower prices within mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials.

Price decrease within energy products

Price reduction for electricity and natural gas had the greatest impact on the total decline in the PIF. Prices within petroleum and petroleum products increased slightly from March to April, but the larger decrease in prices of electricity and natural gas lead to an overall fall for energy goods. Electricity prices fell by 5.4 per cent. Both the system price at Nord Pool and electricity prices for Norwegian households fell during the period.

Prices within the product group miscellaneous manufactured articles fell by 0.8 per cent. Prices for machinery and transport equipment also decreased from March to April.

A 0.8 per cent rise in prices of chemicals contributed to dampen the total decrease in the PIF. Other product groups with increasing prices in April were food and manufactured goods, where prices rose by 0.2 and 0.3 per cent respectively. Higher food prices were due to a rise in prices of fish products and coffee. Drought in Brazil led to a poor coffee harvest and therefore higher import prices on coffee.

Energy products pulled prices down in the domestic market, while import prices fell due to lower prices within miscellaneous manufactured articles and food products. The price decrease was about the same in both markets.

Twelve-month change: Prices up 1 per cent

PIF increased by 1 per cent from April 2013 to April 2014. This was mainly due to a 1.9 per cent rise in prices of food products. Other product groups with higher prices were chemicals and miscellaneous manufactured articles, where prices rose by 4.2 and 3.2 per cent, respectively. The product group that dampened the total rise in the PIF over the last twelve months was mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials.
