Increase in prices of oil and electricity

The price index of first-hand domestic sales rose by 2.6 per cent from May to June 2009. The price rise was mainly due to higher prices of petroleum and petroleum products, but this month was also the first month since September 2008 with an increase in electricity prices.

The price index of first-hand domestic sales rose by 2.6 per cent from May to June 2009. The most important contribution to this rise was an increase in prices within mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials. Prices of petroleum and petroleum products rose by 13.1 per cent from May to June this year. Electricity prices climbed 10.1 per cent in the same period. This was the first month since September 2008 with an increase in the electricity prices.

Crude materials, inedible, except fuels had 2.2 per cent higher prices in June than in May, while food prices rose by 0.9 per cent during the same period, mainly because of higher prices of fish, crustaceans, molluscs and preparations thereof, as well as fruit and vegetables.

Chemicals and related products and machinery and transport equipment were among the groups of commodities that experienced a moderate price decrease from May to June.

Twelve month change: 0.1 per cent increase

The price index of first-hand domestic sales rose 0.1 per cent from June 2008 to June 2009.

Among the commodity groups that experienced increased prices during this period were chemicals and related products, food and live animals as well as machinery and transport equipment. The price increases of these groups from June 2008 to June 2009 were 10.3 per cent, 5.5 per cent and 5.3 per cent, respectively.

Three groups had a large negative twelve month change in June 2009. There was a 16.2 per cent drop in the prices of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials. Also the prices of crude materials, inedible, except fuels as well as prices of animal and vegetable oils, fats and waxes were lower in June this year than June 2008, the prices of these two groups fell 14.4 per cent and 20.6 per cent, respectively.
