First-hand domestic prices decreased

The price index of first-hand domestic sales went down 0.8 per cent from April to May. The prices of most of the commodity groups declined, except chemicals and related products, which had an increase of 0.1 per cent.

The decrease from April to May was mainly due to a 1.9 per cent price fall of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials. In addition prices of crude materials, inedible, except fuels fell 1.4 per cent. The prices for the other main groups showed only minor changes.

12-month rate

Since May last year the prices have fallen by 5.5 per cent. The change is mainly due to lower prices of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, and crude materials. The decline in the former group was due to lower prices of petroleum and petroleum products whereas lower prices of metalliferrous ores and metal scrap explain the decline in the latter group.

12-month development

The 12-month rate of the total index continues to decline, and the rate in May was the lowest so far in 2002. The price development within mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials was the main explanatory variable. This group had a 17.6 per cent decrease in May, compared with 11.2 in April and 9.8 in March.
