Prices of mineral fuels down

The group mineral fuels was the only group that showed negative growth compared with last month. Nevertheless the magnitude of the change caused the total index to decrease by 0.4 per cent.

Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials fell by as much as 3.9 per cent from March to April. This is the largest decrease since late 1990. The fall along with a 4 per cent increase the same period last year made the 12-month rate fall from 24.6 per cent last month to 15.1 per cent in April.

Indication of increased production from OPEC is probably a major reason for the average price of Brent Blend falling 17 per cent (measured in NOK) from March to April. This brought the price level to the lowest since November last year.

Overall increase

Apart from beverages and tobacco, which remained stable, all groups showed a rise. The largest contributor was manufactured goods classified chiefly by material. This group climbed by 0.6 percent from March to April, mainly due to increased import prices of iron and steel.

Food prices continue to increase. The main contributor to the 0.3 per cent rise from March to April was meat and meat products.

End-use

Prices of consumer goods showed no change compared with last month, while the 12-month rate went from 2.3 per cent in March to 1.8 per cent in April, due to a 0.5 increase in this group last year.
