Continued price growth for storage services

The price development in the total index for storage services has been stable since the index was established in the fourth quarter of 2006. The index rose by 9 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2006 to the first quarter of 2008. The total price index grew by about 2.7 per cent during the last quarter.

This is the first time the index is published. The purpose of the index is to show an aggregate price development over time for the storage and warehousing and offshore supply terminals.

Since this index was established in the fourth quarter of 2006, the industry has seen an average price growth of about 9 per cent. The corresponding growth for general storage, frozen/cool storage and other storage has been about 5.7, 11.9 and 11.7 per cent respectively.

The total index rose by 2.7 per cent last quarter while the indices for frozen/cool storage, general storage and other storage rose by 0.2, 2.1 and 9.1 per cent respectively. The average price change for storage services as a whole since the first quarter of 2007 was about 6.3 per cent. In the same period, frozen/cool storage, general storage and other storage saw an increase in prices of about 7.2, 3.6 and 11.6 per cent, respectively.

The total index is the weighted average of five sub-indices pertaining to differen storage types. The sub-indices show the price development in the two main storage types, namely frozen/cool storage and general storage. The two sub-indices constitute about 83 per cent of the total weight in the sample. In addition, a third sub-index that combines the three smaller storage types is published. This sub-index covers bulk storage, container storage, and storage of dangerous goods.

The businesses used in the index belong to two business categories. The majority of the businesses are taken from storage and warehousing (NACE 63.120), which represents about 90 per cent of the total weight while the remaining 10 per cent come from offshore supply terminals (NACE 63.224). A sub-index for both business categories is also published.
