Low rise in CPI

The CPI rose 0.1 per cent from October to November 2012, mainly due to higher prices of electricity. The year-to-year growth in the CPI was 1.1 per cent for November, while the CPI-ATE increased 1.3 per cent in the same period.

Consumer price index. 1998 = 100

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 132.0 (1998=100) as per November 2012, compared with 130.5 in the corresponding period in 2011. This was equivalent to a year-to-year growth of 1.1 per cent in November, equal to the year-to-year growth of October. The year-to year growth in the CPI adjusted for tax changes and excluding energy products (CPI-ATE) was 1.3 per cent in November, up 0.2 percentage points from October.

Monthly change - rise in electricity prices

The CPI rose by 0.1 per cent from October to November 2012. Electricity including grid rent had a price increase of 3.4 per cent. The price increase in variable contracts in particular led to a rise in electricity prices, which resulted in bringing electricity prices including grid rent back to the same level as April of this year. An increase in imputed rentals for housing and higher prices of books also contributed to a positive CPI.

Airline fares showed a price fall of 12.4 per cent, mainly due to a fall in domestic airfares from October to November. In the same period, prices of fuels and lubricants went down by 3.0 per cent.

Year-to-year growth - up 1.1 per cent

The CPI rose by 1.1 per cent from November 2011 to November 2012. Imputed rentals for housing along with higher prices of personal transportation operation were the main contributor to the price growth, with price increases of 1.9 and 3.1 per cent respectively. Prices of restaurant services went up by 3.7 per cent. Other consumption groups that influenced the year-to-year growth in a positive way include airline fares, financial services and food.

Despite a sharp price increase in electricity including grid rent in the last two months, the group still had a dampening effect on the year-to-year growth, with a price fall of 7.9 per cent from November 2011 to November 2012. In the same period of time, prices of telephone services and clothing fell by 6.5 and 2.8 per cent respectively.

The year-to-year growth in the CPI was unchanged from October to November.

The year-to-year growth in the CPI-ATE was 1.3 per cent in November, up 0.2 percentage points from the previous month. The increase was mainly caused by a change in prices of food and clothing. Food prices fell from October to November last year, but remained unchanged for the same period this year. The increase in the year-to-year growth was also influenced by a drop in prices of clothing from October to November 2011, while they rose for the same period this year.
