Weak decrease in CPI

The CPI fell by 0.1 per cent from September to October 2011, mainly due to decreased prices in airline fares, food and non-alcoholic beverages together with electricity. The CPI rose by 1.4 per cent from October 2010 to October 2011, while the CPI-ATE increased by 1.2 per cent in the same period.

Consumer price index. 1998 = 100

The Consumer price index (CPI) was 130.5 (1998=100) as per October 2011, compared with 128.7 in October 2010. This was equivalent to a year-to-year growth of 1.4 per cent in October 2011, down 0.2 percentage points from the previous month. The year-to year growth in the CPI-ATE was 1.2 per cent in October 2011, unchanged from September 2011.

Price falls in October

Several goods and services contributed to the 0.1 per cent decline in the CPI. Prices of airline fares fell by 11.5 per cent from September to October 2011; a similar price fall was also registered for the corresponding period in 2010 and 2009. Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages decreased by 0.5 per cent in October, due to lower prices for the groups fresh and frozen meat and pork, cheese, chocolate and coffee. Prices of electricity including grid rent, declined by 1.7 per cent in the same period. A price fall for books, of 5.9 per cent, was also registered from September to October.

The prices of clothing rose by 1.7 per cent from September to October 2011.

CPI up 1.4 per cent the last twelve months

The CPI rose by 1.4 per cent from October 2010 to October 2011. The main contributors to the rise were fuel and lubricants, alcoholic beverages and tobacco together with non-alcoholic beverages. Prices of fuel and lubricants increased by 10.1 per cent, while prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco together with non-alcoholic beverages rose by 6.9 and 7.9 per cent respectively. Among other consumption groups that showed a rise in prices in the last twelve months were restaurant services, services within personal care and insurance.

The year-to-year growth in the CPI was dampened by a decline in prices within audiovisual equipment and electricity.

A decrease in the year-to-year growth

The year-to-year growth in the CPI went down by 0.2 percentage points from September to October, from 1.6 in September to 1.4 in October. The main cause was that the prices of electricity including grid rent declined by 1.7 per cent from September to October in 2011, compared to an increase by 1.6 per cent in the same period last year. At the same time, prices of transport services fell more from September to October this year than in the corresponding period last year.

The year-to year growth in the CPI-ATE was 1.2 per cent in October 2011, unchanged from September 2011.
