Slight increase in the CPI

The CPI increased by 0.2 per cent from March to April 2010. The prices on clothes and books contributed most to the growth. The CPI rose by 3.3 per cent from April 2009 to April 2010, while CPI-ATE increased by 1.7 per cent in the same period.

Consumer price index. 1998 = 100

The consumer price index (CPI) was 129.6 (1998=100) per April 2010, compared to 125.4 at the same time in 2009. This corresponds to a year-to-year growth of 3.3 per cent in April 2010, down from 3.4 per cent the previous month. The year-to year growth in the CPI-ATE was 1.7 per cent in April 2010, unchanged from the previous month.

Increased prices on clothes and book in April

The CPI went up by 0.2 per cent from March to April 2010. The largest contributors to this increase were clothes and books with prices rising 3.3 and 30.6 per cent respectively. This left the prices of books at nearly the same price level as before the annual book sale in March. Fuels and lubricants continued its price increase from March with 1.5 per cent rise in April. Prices on food went up by 0.8 per cent, mostly due to higher prices on fish, vegetables and fruits.

A fall in electricity prices and airline fares of 2.7 and 10.8 per cent respectively, dampened the growth in March.

Consumer prices up by 3.3 per cent last twelve months

The year-to-year growth in the CPI went down from 3.4 per cent in March to 3.3 per cent in April 2010. Like last month much of this growth can be explained by a strong rise in electricity prices included grid tariff of 35.5 per cent. Prices on fuels and lubricants went up by 13.8 per cent. Increased prices on recreational and cultural services, restaurants and package holidays also contributed to the growth.

Prices on clothes fell by 4.1 per cent these last twelve months, and were together with audio-visual equipment and airline fares the main contributors to dampening the growth.

The year-to-year growth in the CPI fell by 0.1 percentage points from March to April, mostly due to a stronger decrease in airline fares and a weaker increase in prices on fuels and lubricants compared to the same period last year.

The year-to-year growth in the CPI-ATE was 1.7 per cents this month, unchanged from March.
