Increase in the year-to-year change

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 0.2 per cent from February to March 2001. The increase was mainly due to higher tariffs on electricity and higher rentals for housing. The year-to-year change in March was 3.7 per cent while it was 3.6 per cent in February.

In March 2001 the CPI stood at 108.6 (1998=100), while in March 2000 it was 104.7.

Price increase from February to March 2001

The tariffs on electricity continued to rise in March and were the main contributors to the rise in the all-item index with an increase of 3.1 per cent. Rentals for housing rose by 0.3 per cent while the costs for owner occupied-housing increased only slightly by 0.1 per cent last month.

The prices of food went up 0.5 per cent from February to March. It was mainly due to increased prices of fresh meat, fresh fruit and vegetables.

The price index for transport increased by 0.4 per cent and was caused by higher prices on bus, subway and tramtickets.

The prices of petrol decreased by 1.2 per cent in March and dampened the price increase last month, lower prices for audio-visual equipment and IT-equipment also contributed.

Year-to-year change

From March 2000 to March 2001 the CPI increased by 3.7 per cent. Higher rentals for housing and increased tariffs on electricity are major contributors to the price increase. Electricity tariffs are more than 25 per cent higher than the prices in March last year. Costs for owner-occupied housing have increased by 4.6 per cent while rentals for housing went up 4.1 per cent during the last 12 months.

The price index for transport has increased by 3.2 per cent. This is due to a rise in prices of vehicles and higher prices of passenger transport by road and air.

Higher prices of hairdressing and some appliances for personal care and higher prices of different services for social protection also contributed to the year to year change last month.

Lower prices of petrol, telephone products, audio-visual equipment, and footwear have reduced the price increase. In particular the prices of IT-equipment have decreased during the last 12 months.

The year-to-year growth increased from 3.6 per cent in February to 3.7 per cent in March. This was mainly due to the price development of electricity. The increase in the year to year change was dampened by a decrease in the prices of petrol.
