EEA consumer prices rose by 1.2 per cent

The harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) went up by 1.2 per cent from 1998 to 1999. The increase is due to higher prices of transport, education, alcoholic beverages and tobacco whereas there was a decrease in prices of communication.

The HICP for the EEA was 105.2 (1996=100) in December, an increase of 0.4 per cent from November. From December 1998 to December 1999 the HICP increased by 1.7 per cent.

The HICP for Norway went up by 2.1 per cent from 1998 to 1999. The increase is due to higher prices of different services. On the other hand the prices of imported consumer goods and electricity decreased last year.
