Fall in the HICP

The harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) for Norway decreased by 0.4 per cent from December 2008 to January 2009. Lower prices of food and seasonal sales on clothing contributed most to the decline. Increasing prices of vehicles and fuels pulled in the opposite direction.

Harmonized index of consumer prices

The HICP for Norway was 107.3 (2005=100) in January 2009, compared with 104.6 in January 2008. The year-to-year growth was 2.6 per cent in January 2009, the same as in December 2008. See the consumer price index for more details.

EEA, EU and euro area

Provisional data shows that the HICP for the EU and EEA were 108.8 in December 2008. For the euro area, the HICP was 107.9. The year-to-year growth was 2.2 per cent for both the EU and the EEA, and 1.6 per cent for the euro area. In the euro area, the year-to-year growth is estimated at 1.1 percent for January 2009.
