Higher inflation in Norway than in EMU

The harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) for Norway rose by 0.3 per cent from September to October 2008. The year-to-year growth in the HICP was 5.1 per cent in Norway, while in the euro area (EMU-the Economic and Monetary Union) it was estimated to 3.2 per cent for October.

Harmonized index of consumer prices

The HICP for Norway was 108.8 (2005=100) in October 2008, compared with 103.5 in October 2007. The year-to-year growth was 5.1 per cent in October 2008, compared with 4.8 per cent in September 2008. The main contributor to the growth in the HICP was rise in electricity prices, while prices of gasoline and flight fares pulled in the opposite direction. See the consumer price index for more details.

EEA, EU and EMU for september

The HICP in September was 109.3 for the EU and the EEA and 108.5 in the euro area. The year-to-year growth in September was 4.2 per cent for both the EU and the EEA, and 3.6 per cent for the euro area.

In September the year-to-year growth in household, water, electricity and other fuels was 12.2 percent in Norway and 6.2 percent in the EMU. Both in Norway and in the EMU, electricity was an important contributor to this increase. In the EMU prices of gas and liquid fuels has risen sharply. Gas prices are not a part of the Norwegian HICP, because it is not common in the households. Liquid fuels increased also here.

Detailed figures for October will be published on Eurostats home pages on November 14.
