2.2 per cent increase for Harmonized index

The harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) for Norway rose by 2.2 per cent from 2002 to 2003. The HICP was 116.4 (1996=100) in December, unchanged from November. The year-to-year growth in the EEA was 2.0 per cent in November.

The annual growth in the HICP for Norway was 2.2 per cent in 2003. The price increase was mainly caused by a strong rise in the tariffs on electricity. From December 2002 to December 2003 the HICP increased by 0.6 per cent. HICP was on average 116.4 in 2003. See http://www.ssb.no/english/kpi_en/ for more details.

Year-to-year change in the EEA

From November 2002 to November 2003 the EEA consumer prices went up by 2.0 per cent. The highest increase occurred in Ireland - up by 3.3 per cent, while Finland recorded the lowest rates of 1.2 per cent.

The prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco rose by 5.9 per cent in the EEA from November 2002 to November 2003. With the exception of Denmark and Norway the prices went up in all the countries within the EEA. France recorded the highest growth, 17.3 per cent.

The prices within communications and recreation and culture went slightly down in the EEA from November 2002 to November 2003.

In advance, Eurostat estimated the year-to-year change in November in the Euro-zone to 2.2 per cent, which turned out to be the actual price growth. Expected growth in the consumer prices in the Euro-zone in December was 2.1 per cent. The HICP for the European Union (EU) increased by 2.0 per cent in November.
