Harmonized index increases

The harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) for Norway was 114.3 in October (1996=100), up 0.2 per cent from September. The year-to-year growth in the EEA was 1.9 per cent in September.

The HICP rose by 0.2 per cent from September to October. The increase was among other things caused by a rise in the tariffs on electricity and in the prices of clothing and footwear. HICP has increased by 1.3 per cent during the last 12 months. See http://www.ssb.no/kpi_en/ for more details.

Change from August to September in the EEA area

The HICP for the EEA was 111.6 in September, up 0.4 per cent from August. Greece faced the strongest increase in the consumer prices with 2.1 per cent. Austria and Portugal on the other hand, had a decrease of 0.1 per cent in the consumer prices.

Prices of clothing and footwear went up from August to September most likely as a result of seasonal changes. Greece had the greatest increase in the prices. Educational expenditures had a rise in September, where Denmark had the highest increase. Prices of restaurants- and accommodation services on the other hand, went down. Belgium experienced the largest decline. Prices within transport sector went down as well, caused mainly by a strong decline in prices of airline fares.

Year-to-year change in the EEA

From September 2001 to September 2002 the EEA consumer prices went up by 1.9 per cent. Ireland had the highest growth of 4.5 per cent, while Germany and Great Britain had the lowest of 1.0 per cent.

The prices of restaurants- and accommodation services rose 4.4 per cent in the EEA area from September 2001 to September 2002. Greece and Ireland contributed with 7.5 and 7.0 per cent respectively. Educational expenditures had an increase of 3.9 per cent in the EEA area. Austria had a rise of 28.2 per cent, while Sweden on the other hand, showed a decline of 27.3 per cent. There has been a decrease in prices of communication, mainly due to lower prices of telephone equipment.
