Harmonised index rose by 2.9 per cent

The harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP) for Norway was 109.8 (1996=100) in May, an increase of 0.1 per cent from April. From May 1999 to May this year the index increased by 2.9 per cent compared with 2.7 per cent in April.

The price growth from April to May is mainly due to increased prices of petrol, alcoholic beverages, clothing and tax fares. The price increase was limited by decreased prices of audio-visual equipment and lower tariffs on electricity.

The HICP for the EEA was 106.0 (1996=100) in April, an increase of 0.1 per cent from March. The 12-month rate for April was 1.7 per cent and 1.9 per cent in March. The HICP for the European Monetary Union was 105.7 in April, up 0.1 per cent from March. The year to year growth in April was 1.9 per cent.

Increase in prices of transport and educational services

From April 1999 to April 2000 the prices of transport services have increased by 4.4 per cent in the EEA mainly due to increased petroleum prices. Also the prices of educational facilities rose in the EEA area by 3.7 per cent.

Lowest growth in the United Kingdom and Sweden

In the EEA area the United Kingdom (UK) and Sweden have experienced the lowest price increase with respectively 0.6 and 1.0 per cent during the last twelve months. The moderate price growth in the UK was due to falling prices of clothing and footwear and communication. Sweden also experienced falling prices of communication, an 8.2 per cent decrease for this group. The prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages also showed a slight fall in Sweden. The prices of communication have dropped in the entire EEA area except from Finland.
