Construction costs up 0.6 per cent

The construction costs of residential buildings increased by 0.6 per cent from July to August this year. Wage statistics for the second quarter of 2008 are included in the construction costs, and are the main reason for the cost increase.

The labour cost rose by 1.3 per cent from July to August this year, while the material costs increased by 0.1 per cent in the same period.

The construction costs of detached houses of wood and multi-dwelling houses increased by 0.6 and 0.8 per cent respectively from July to August this year. The material costs of detached houses of wood remained unchanged, while multi-dwelling houses rose by 0.2 per cent in the same period.

From August last year to August the construction costs of residential buildings increased by 5.7 per cent, while the material costs rose by 4.4 per cent in the same period. The total construction costs of detached houses of wood increased by 5.1 per cent, while multi-dwelling rose by 6.6 per cent.

1  Construction cost index for residential buildings is weighted by index for detached houses of wood and index for multi-dwelling houses.

Material indices for timber, concrete and steel

The material indices for timber, concrete and steel are available in a separate table . These are materials with a low degree of processing and therefore sensitive to fluctuation in the prices of raw materials. The representative goods and their mutual weights are taken from the construction cost index for residential building. Together, these groups of materials have a weight of 13 per cent in the total material cost index for residential buildings.
