Construction costs up 0.4 per cent

The index of residential buildings increased by 0.4 per cent from April to May this year. Labour costs rose by 0.8 per cent and material costs remained unchanged in the same period.

The construction costs of residential buildings rose by 3.6 per cent in May 2002 compared with May 2001. Labour costs and material costs increased by 5.2 and 2.5 per cent respectively, in the same period.

Wage statistics for the first quarter of 2002 are included in the construction cost figures for May and contribute to a labour cost increase in May.
