Construction costs rose by 4.1 per cent in 2001

The construction cost of residential buildings increased by 4.1 per cent in December 2001 compared with December 2000. Material costs rose by 3.9 per cent in the same period. The cost of electricians and hiring plumbers increased the most.

Over the course of the past year the index of electrical work increased by 6.4 per cent for detached houses and 6.3 per cent for multi-dwelling houses. The index of plumbing work increased by 5.5 per cent for detached houses and 6.2 per cent for multi-dwelling houses.

The construction costs of residential buildings rose by 0.9 per cent from November to December 2001. Wage statistics for third quarter 2001 were included in the building cost index for December. Material cost increased by 0.1 per cent in this period.
