Construction costs up 4.8 per cent

The construction cost of residential buildings in Norway increased by 4.8 per cent from September 1999 to September 2000. Material costs rose by 4.4 per cent in the same period. The cost of hiring plumbers and electricians increased the most.

Over the course of the past year the index for plumbing work increased by 8.3 per cent for detached houses and 7.9 per cent for multi-dwelling houses. The index for electrical work increased by 7.3 per cent for detached houses and 6.7 per cent for multi-dwelling houses. This was significantly more than the other subindices.

Overall construction costs for residential buildings rose by 1.2 per cent from August to September 2000. Wage statistics for second quarter 2000 were included in the building cost index for September. Material costs increased by 0.3 per cent in this period.
