Construction costs up 3.6 per cent

The construction costs of residential buildings in Norway increased by a total of 3.6 per cent from June 1999 to June 2000. Material costs rose by 3.4 per cent in the same period. The difference between detached homes and blocks of flats was small. The cost of hiring electricians and plumbers increased the most.

Over the course of the past year the subindex for electrical work increased by 5.4 per cent for detached homes and 4.7 per cent for blocks of flats. The subindex for plumbing work increased by 6.3 per cent for detached homes and 6.0 per cent for blocks of flats. This was significantly more than the other subindices, which rose between two and four per cent.

Overall construction costs for residential buildings rose 0.3 per cent from May to June 2000. Material costs also increased by 0.3 per cent in this period. In addition to increased material costs, wage statistics for first quarter 2000 were included in the building cost index for June. Costs for painting, paperhanging and floorcoating rose the most from May to June 2000, by 0.4 per cent for both detached houses and blocks of flats.
