Road construction costs rose by 1.7 per cent in 2016

The road construction costs increased by 2.2 per cent from the 4th quarter of 2015 to the 4th quarter of 2016, while the average increase in 2016 was 1.7 per cent.

On average the construction costs for road construction increased by 1.7 per cent in 2016. This is the same growth as in 2015. The average increase for the maintenance of roads was 1.2 per cent in 2016 compared to 2015, while asphalt work costs was reduced by 0, 3 per cent in the same period due to lower material costs. 

Reduced material costs in road construction

The construction costs for rock tunnels rose by 0.6 per cent from the 3rd quarter to the 4th quarter of 2016. During the same period there was also an increase in the cost of construction of concrete bridges and open air roads. These costs rose by 0.1 and 0.4 per cent respectively. The growth can be seen in the context of increased costs associated with labor. The material cost for road construction decreased for all subareas from the 3rd quarter to the 4th quarter of 2016 and contributed to curbing the growth. The material costs in connection with the construction of concrete bridges decreased by 1.0 per cent, while it for the open air roads and rock tunnels showed a decline of 0.1 per cent in the period. 

Increased costs for the maintenance of roads

The costs connected to maintenance of roads increased by 1.3 per cent from the 3rd quarter to the 4th quarter of 2016. The costs for asphalt work rose by 2.3 per cent in the period, while those maintenance in wintertime increased by 1.3 per cent. Material costs for winter maintenance increased by 7.3 per cent.
