Road construction costs up 2.2 per cent

Road construction costs increased by 2.2 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2014 to the fourth quarter of 2015. From the third to fourth quarter of 2015, road construction costs rose by 0.3 per cent.

Construction costs for rock tunnels had the highest increase last year with a growth of 3.2 per cent. The construction costs of concrete bridges increased by 3.0 per cent, while open air roads rose by 1.7 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2014 to the fourth quarter of 2015. From the third to the fourth quarter of 2015, the construction costs of rock tunnels increased by 0.7 per cent, concrete bridges increased by 0.4 per cent and open air roads rose by 0.1 per cent.

Costs for maintenance of roads increased by 0.4 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2014 to the fourth quarter of 2015. The costs of labour related to maintenance of roads increased by 3.0 per cent, while material costs decreased by 2.2 per cent during the same period. Construction costs for asphalt works decreased by 2.4 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2014 to the fourth quarter of 2015. This is related to lower oil prices, resulting in a reduction in material costs for asphalt works of 5.5 per cent.

Costs of road maintenance in wintertime increased by 0.8 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2014 to the fourth quarter of 2015. The associated material costs increased by 7.5 per cent, while a decrease in costs for transport contributed in the opposite direction.
