Higher costs for road construction

Road construction costs increased by 0.9 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2012 to the first quarter of 2013. Materials costs rose by 1.4 per cent, while machinery and labour costs increased by 0.5 and 0.4 per cent respectively in the same period.

The construction costs of rock tunnels rose by 1.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2013. In the same period the costs of concrete bridges and open air roads increased by 0.6 and 0.8 per cent respectively. From the first quarter of 2012 to the first quarter of 2013, the total road construction costs rose by 2.1 per cent.

Road maintenance costs increased by 0.6 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2012 to the first quarter of 2013, and are 1.0 per cent higher than in the first quarter of 2012.
