Road construction falls 2 per cent
Road construction costs decreased by 2.0 per cent from the third to the fourth quarter last year. The costs of materials and machinery decreased by 5.2 per cent, while labour costs rose by 1.9 per cent in the same period.
The construction costs of open air road decreased the most; by 3.3 per cent from the third to the fourth quarter of 2008. The costs of machinery and transport decreased partly due to the strong fall in oil prices. Construction costs of concrete bridges and rock tunnels both decreased by 0.2 per cent in the same period.
From the fourth quarter of 2007 to the fourth quarter of 2008, the total road construction costs rose by 5.0 per cent. The construction costs of concrete bridges increased the most last year by 8.0 per cent. Construction costs of rock tunnels and open air road rose by 4.5 and 4.0 per cent respectively.
Fall in maintenance of roads
The costs of winter maintenance of roads decreased by 1.4 per cent from the third to the fourth quarter of 2008, and were 4.1 per cent higher in the fourth quarter of 2008 than in the fourth quarter of 2007. The construction costs of asphalt work decreased by 12.9 per cent in the last quarter of 2008.
