Construction cost index for road construction, Q1 2008

With an increase of 2.2 per cent, the construction costs of open air roads had the largest increase from the fourth quarter of 2007 to the first quarter of 2008. The costs of building concrete bridges and rock tunnels rose by 1.4 and 0.4 per cent respectively.

From the first quarter of 2007 to the first quarter of 2008, total construction costs increased by 8.7 per cent. The construction costs of open air roads had the strongest increase, up 10.2 per cent. The cost of concrete bridges and rock tunnels rose by 7.2 and 5.9 per cent respectively in this period.

The maintenance costs of roads increased by 1.9 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2007 to the first quarter of 2008, and are now 10.0 per cent higher than one year ago. The construction costs of asphalt work had the strongest increase, up 16.0 per cent during the last year.
