More expensive to construct bridges
The construction costs of roads rose by 1.0 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2006 to the first quarter of 2007. High prices on steel give strong increase for bridge projects and concrete construction in general.
From the first quarter last year to the first quarter this year, the construction costs of roads rose by 5.0 per cent, while the material costs increased by 5.2 per cent.
The construction costs of concrete bridges increased the most, with 1.3 per cent the last quarter and with 7.4 per cent last year. From the fourth quarter of 2006 to the first quarter of 2007, the costs of rock tunnels and open air roads both increased by 0.8 per cent, and are now 4.7 and 4.0 per cent higher than last year respectively.
The maintenance costs of roads increased by 0.6 per cent from the fourth quarter of 2006 to the first quarter of 2007 and are 3.8 per cent higher than one year ago.
