Increase in both revenue and expenditure

A rise in central government revenue and expenditure in the second quarter of 2008 has led to a surplus of NOK 199 billion on the central government fiscal account. This is an increase of 11.3 per cent from the same period last year.

The central government fiscal account including the National Insurance Scheme shows total revenue of NOK 404.7 billion. Compared to the second quarter of 2007 this is an increase by 12 per cent. The rise is mainly due to higher tax revenue and elevated operating surplus from extraction of petroleum.

Total expenditure amounted to NOK 205.8 billion in the second quarter of 2008. This is 12.7 per cent more than in the corresponding period of 2007. The growth in expenditure is mainly due to an increase in transfers to municipalities and county municipalities and transfers to other state accounts.

Net transfers to the Government Pension Fund - Global has increased by 12.9 per cent from the corresponding period last year. Net transfers in the second quarter were NOK 80.8 billion.

The quarterly figures are subject to random variations and must be interpreted with caution.
