Growth in government revenue

In the third quarter 2006, the Central government fiscal account including the National Insurance Scheme shows a total revenue of NOK 144 billion. This is an increase of NOK 14 billion, or 10.9 per cent, compared with the same period in 2005.

The total expenditure shows a decrease of NOK 10 billion compared with third quarter last year, and amounts to NOK 149 billion.

The raise in government income is mainly due to increased operating surplus from extraction of petroleum and higher tax revenue. The operating surplus rose by 21.0 per cent, from NOK 25.2 billion to NOK 30.5 billion compared to the corresponding period in 2005. Tax revenue to the fiscal account increased by NOK 6.0 billion, or 9.5 per cent, to NOK 68.7 billion. Employers’ contributions to the National Insurance Scheme rose by NOK 1.8 billion, or 10.5 per cent, to NOK 19.2 billion in the same period.

The decrease in total expenditure in this year’s third quarter has to do with the increase in the second quarter. This variation can be explained partly by various periods for payments.

The deficit before net transfers to the Government Pension Fund- Global amounted to NOK 4.8 billion in the third quarter 2006.The corresponding number the same period in 2005 was NOK 28.6 billion.
