Decreased government surplus

In the second quarter 2003, the Central government fiscal account including the National Insurance Scheme shows a surplus before net transfers to the government petroleum fund of NOK 76 billion. This is a decrease of NOK 16 billion, or 18 per cent, compared with the same period last year.

The decline in government surplus is mainly due to increased government expenditures. The total expenditures in the second quarter 2003 amounted to NOK 153 billion, compared with NOK 141 billion in the second quarter 2002. This is an increase of approximately 9 per cent.

The total revenues amount to NOK 230 billion second quarter this year, a modest decline of 4 billion, or 2 per cent, compared with the same period 2002.
