Modest increase in government expenditure

In the Central government budget proposal for 2003 total expenditure amounts to NOK 580 billion. This corresponds to a 2 per cent increase in expenditure compared with the approved budget for 2002, when Central government expenditure totalled NOK 567 billion.

Statistics Norway has now updated the tables for central government revenue and expenditure by main item and expenditure by program. The tables now show the Central government budget proposal for 2003, the approved budget for 2002, and accounting figures for previous years.

In the budget proposal for 2003 contributions from the National insurance scheme are estimated to NOK 214.3 billion. This corresponds to an 8.7 per cent increase compared with the previous years approved budget. The extra ordinary transfers to county municipalities in 2002, related to the change in ownership of public hospitals, can explain the fact that Central government total expenditure shows a modest increase in 2003.
