From January to September 2008, total tax payments amounted to NOK 557 billion. This is an increase of NOK 96 billion, or 20.8 per cent compared to the same period in 2007.

This article was corrected 24 November 2008 with updated figures for the petroleum taxes from the Continental shelf. It is only the figures for petroleum taxes that have been corrected.

The increase in tax payments of 20.8 per cent is related to tax revenues from the petroleum sector in August. Tax revenues from petroleum activity in August 2008 amounted to NOK 48.2 billion. In 2007 the tax revenues from the petroleum activity was paid in April and October only. This contributes to an increase in tax revenues compared to the same period in 2007.

The increase also includes NOK 174.1 million in tax payments from Svalbard. Svalbard had not been included in the tax account statistics until 2008.

Total tax paid to local government amounted to NOK 98.2 billion. This is an increase of 5.6 per cent compared to the same period last year. NOK 81.5 billion of this amount was tax income to municipalities and NOK 16.7 billion was income to county municipalities, which is an increase of 5.7 per cent and 5.2 per cent respectively.

Member contributions and employer contributions to the National insurance scheme in total amounted to NOK 159.3 billion. Compared to 2007, this is an increase of 14.8 billion or 10.2 per cent.

The publishing of tax account statistics for the period January-August 2008 was postponed until October due to the implementation of a new tax reporting system (SOFIE) at the Directorate of taxes. This is also why Statistics Norway has not been able to create a table for tax revenues by type.

Some new features are that the tax account statistics now also include tax revenue from Svalbard. Statistics Norway is only able to present total tax revenue, and cannot specify different types of taxes.

Statistics Norway has also chosen to present four new tax variables: Surtax on gross income, Community tax, Special tax on petroleum income and Ordinary income tax on petroleum revenue. These figures can be found in StatBank. As before, these figures are accumulated under the variable "Remainder" in the tables.

Due to the said changes, Statistics Norway has created a new time series for the Tax account statistics in StatBank starting from August 2008. The previous figures can be found in tables 03728 and 05284.
