Government Pension Fund - Norway increased

At the end of the first half of 2007, the Government Pension Fund - Norway’s total capital amounted to NOK 119 billion. Compared with total capital at the end of 2006, this was an increase of NOK 10 billion, or 9 per cent.

The value of the holdings of shares and other equity increased by NOK 10.5 billion, or 16.6 per cent. Moreover, the value of the holdings of bonds decreased by NOK 3.5 billion, while the value of deposits, commercial papers and other financial deposits increased by approximately NOK 3 billion compared with the value at the end of 2006.

Portfolio composition

The portfolio of shares and other equity invested in the Norwegian market had a market value of NOK 60.4 billion at the end of the first half of 2007. This corresponds to a share of 50.8 per cent of the total capital. The portfolio was invested in central government and private non-financial enterprises, life insurance companies, commercial banks and savings banks.

The interest-bearing portfolio invested in the Norwegian market had a market value of NOK 40.8 billion. This corresponds to a share of 34.3 per cent of the total capital. The portfolio was invested in bonds, commercial papers and deposits. Bonds constituted the main part of the interest-bearing portfolio.

The market value of the total foreign portfolio amounted to NOK 17.5 billion at the end of the first half of 2007. NOK 13.5 billion was invested in shares and other equity, and NOK 4 billion was invested in interest-bearing securities. This constitutes 11.3 and 3.4 per cent of total capital, respectively.

The Government Pension Fund was established January 1 2006. The Fund is comprised of the Government Pension Fund - Global, which is a continuation of the Petroleum Fund, and The Government Pension Fund - Norway, previously known as the National Insurance Scheme fund. The operational management of the Government Pension Fund - Norway is carried out by Folketrygdfondet.
