Big growth in Internet use

55 per cent of the Norwegian population used Internet per day in 2005. This is 11 percentage points higher than in 2004. Simultaneously there seems to be a decline in newspaper reading and radio listening. On the other hand book reading is increasing.

After an even growth in use of Internet the latest years, there was a leap last year. The percentage using Internet on an average day increased from 44 to 55 among persons 9-79 years from 2004 to 2005. The increase was particularly big among the youngest ones.

The reading of newspapers is on the other hand going in the opposite direction. During the later years the portion of readers has declined. From 2003 to 2004 there has again been a slight decline, from 77 per cent to 75 per cent.

Stable TV viewing

The portion of people who watch television on an average day has changed little during the last year. In 2005 the percentage was 85, compared with 83 per cent in 2004. The portion of radio listeners on an average day was 3 percentage points lower in 2005 than in the previous year. We watched television for 2 hours and 27 minutes per day in 2005, 5 minutes more than the year before. We used 1 hour and 24 minutes per day on radio listening in 2005, an increase of 4 minutes from 2004.

More MP3

26 per cent of those who listened to sound players on an average day in 2005 used an MP3-player. This is a sharp increase from 2004, when only 12 per cent used such a player. More than every third Norwegian now has an MP3-player. The use of sound players has still been on a stable level from 2004 to 2005.

While the percentage of book readers on an average day was 17 in 1997, it has increased to 25 in 2005. The number of people who read weeklies, magazines and cartoons on an average day has changed minimally from 2004 to 2005. The portion using video has also stayed pretty stable.

More DVD-players and broadband

While the access to VHS players in the households is slowly declining, there has been a considerable growth of DVD players. From 2004 to 2005 this increased from 61 to 75 per cent. 51 per cent had Internet with broadband connection in their household in 2005, an increase from 29 per cent in 2004.This strong increase can give some explanation to the big growth in Internet use during the last year.

Among Norwegians 11 per cent use game consoles or play games on a PC during an average day. Among 9-15 year olds 57 percent among the boys and 23 per cent among the girls use such games during a day.
