Fall in meat production

A total of 141 905 tonnes of meat from domestic animals were approved for human consumption during the first six months of 2012; a decrease of 5.6 per cent from the same period last year.

A total of 61 300 tonnes of pork, 41 300 tonnes of poultry, 35 600 tonnes of beef and veal and 3 400 tonnes of mutton and lamb were approved during the first half of 2012.

Compared with the first half of 2011, the production of meat from cattle and poultry was almost the same in 2012. The production of meat from beef and veal decreased by 4 900 tonnes or 12 per cent from 2010 to 2011.
