Increase in meat production

129 000 tonnes of meat from domestic animal production were approved for the market in the first six months of 2004. This represents an increase of 6 per cent compared with the same period last year.

55 800 tonnes of pork, 44 000 tonnes of beef and veal and 26 600 tonnes of poultry were approved for the market during the first six months of 2004. The production of meat from pigs, poultry and cattle increased by 10, 8 and 3 per cent respectively. The production of other types of meat, particularly mutton, decreased.

Pork and poultry accounted for 64 per cent of the approved carcasses. The quantity of pork accounted for 43 per cent of the total meat production, while poultry accounted for 21 per cent.
