Low grain yields in 2009

The total grain production in 2009 is estimated at 1.02 million tonnes; a decrease of 27 per cent from the year before and the lowest production since 1994. Wheat and rye yields were particularly low.

Yield, kg per decare. 1994-2009*

According to preliminary estimates from The Norwegian Agricultural Purchasing and Marketing Co-operation, the total grain harvest consisted of 240 000 tonnes of wheat, 435 000 tonnes of barley, 245 000 tonnes of oats and 26 500 tonnes of rye in 2009. Including all grain crops, average grain yield per decare was calculated at 339 kg compared with 455 kg in 2008.

Decreasing wheat area

The area of wheat decreased by 12 per cent to 817 600 decares in 2009. Average decare yield of wheat for the country as a whole was calculated at 322 kg.

The barley area increased by 54 200 decares to 1.35 million decares in 2009. Average decare yield of barley for the entire country was 351 kg.

The area of oats sown increased by 33 600 decares to 807 400 decares in 2009. The decare yield of 334 kg is about 90 kg less than in 2008.

A total of 13 800 holdings grew grain in 2009. The average grain area per holding increased from 150 to 221 decares from 1999 to 2009.
