Low grain yields in 2012

The total grain production in 2012 is estimated at 1.1 million tonnes; an increase of 4 per cent from the year before.

Grain, total. 1999-2012*. 1 000 tonnes.

According to preliminary estimates from The Norwegian Agricultural Purchasing and Marketing Co-operation, the total grain harvest consisted of 235 000 tonnes of wheat, 550 000 tonnes of barley, 225 000 tonnes of oats and 5 200 tonnes of rye in 2012.

The average decare yields of barley and oats were 354 kg and 326 kg respectively in 2012. The average decare yield of wheat was calculated to be 352 kg.

Increase in the area of barley and spring wheat

Due to difficult weather conditions in autumn 2011, the areas of winter wheat and rye were strongly reduced. The area of spring wheat increased by 60 000 decares to a total of 648 000 decares in 2012. The area of barley sown increased by 76 000 decares to 1.56 million decares. The area of oats decreased by 27 00 decares to 689 000 decares.

A total of 12 300 holdings grew grain in 2012, and the average grain area per holding was 238 decares.
