Finnmark: The average holding up to 160 decares

The average agricultural area in use increased by 65 decares to 160 decares from 1989 to 1999. This represented an increase by 65 per cent, and the size of the average holding in Finnmark asserted itself with the country as a whole. The average holding in Norway had 147 decares in use.

It is the climatic conditions that explain why the holdings in Finnmark are so big. In other parts of the country two or more good crops are common, but in Finnmark such possibilities are rare. This must be compensated with bigger area in use.

All in all 106 000 decares agricultural land was in use in Finnmark in 1999. Almost 80 per cent of the area were cultivated meadow for mowing and pasturing. Other open field represented about 8 000 decares and was mainly used for production of green fodder. Surface cultivated area represented 14 000 decares.

Unchanged number of domestic animals - less holdings with livestock

The number of domestic animals has - with exception of laying hens - changed slightly since 1989. The number of holdings with animal has on the other hand fallen dramatically. The number of holdings with cattle fell 20 per cent to 269 holdings, and the number of holdings with sheep one year and older almost has been cut into half to 262 holdings.

Less than 700 holdings

In 1999 there were 658 holdings with at least 5 decares agricultural area in use. This represented about 350 holdings less than 10 years earlier. In more than half of all the municipalities in county of Finnmark, the number of holdings with area in use were 20 or less.

The number of holdings with less than 50 decares in use fell from 453 to 140, while the remaining holdings became bigger. The number of holdings with 200 decares or more increased from 150 to more than 200 in 1999.

750 full time equivalents

All in all the labour input at the holdings in Finnmark corresponded to 750 full time equivalents in 1998/1999. At half of the holdings the labour input corresponded to one full time equivalent or more and at one out of three holdings the labour input corresponded to less than a half full time equivalent each.

Younger holders

The average age fell from 51.7 years in 1989 to 48.9 years in 1999. It was the part of holders 60 years and older that decreased, while the part of holders between 40 and 59 years increased from 44 per cent to 53 per cent. The census also showed that every fourth holder was a single holder, slightly less than in1989. In the whole country 20 per cent of the holders were single holders, and none of the other counties had such big part single holders as in Finnmark.
