Sogn og Fjordane: 1300 holdings with machinery pooling

1 300 of the holdings in the county of Sogn og Fjordane took part in machinery pooling or in exchanging machinery in 1999. Most common were machinery pooling in connections to harvesting of course fodder.

Not unexpected it was in work that requires larger and more expensive machinery, pooling or machinery exchange was most common. Mowing of course fodder plants and baling of course fodder were most common, and about 400 holdings took part in machinery pooling or in exchanging machinery connected to such operations. About the same number of holdings took part in co-operating to spreading of manure, while some fewer holdings co-operated in ploughing and harrowing, seeding and spraying.

Pooling machinery and exchanging machinery without any payment, must be understood as the holders participate in a pool with their own machinery, or that they are members in a more formal co-operation with common machinery. If two holders own 50 per cent each of some machinery, is by this definition not pooling or exchanging of machinery.

One of four holdings shut down

In 1999 a total of 5 300 holdings operated at least 5 decares agricultural land. Since 1989 the number of holdings has fallen about 25 per cent. It was the minor holdings that shut down the farming, and the number of holdings which operated less than 50 decares has been cut into half. The remaining holdings have become bigger and the number of holdings that operated 200 decares or more has almost been tripled since 1989. The average holding has in the ten-year period increased 25 decares to 89 decares, and this was of the minor holdings in the country.

6 500 full time equivalent

All in all the labour input corresponded to 6 500 full-time equivalents at the holdings in Sogn og Fjordane in 1998/1999. At 2 900, or more than half of the holdings, the labour input corresponded to one full-time equivalent each. At 1 100 holdings the labour input was less than half a full time equivalent.

Of 9 200 holders (included spouse and cohabitants), 2 900 worked at least 1 500 hours at the holding. The corresponding number in 1989 was 4 300 holders.

30 per cent with agricultural training

At 1 600 or almost every third holding, one or both of the holders had some kind of agricultural training. The most had education at agronomists level or higher. 29 per cent of the men and 8 per cent of the female holders had agricultural training. In 1989 there was a trained or educated holder at 23 per cent of the holdings. 24 per cent of the men and 4 per cent of the female were trained or educated.
