Nordland: 9 out of 10 farm buildings older than 10 years

800 farm buildings were constructed in the 90s. This represented 10 per cent of all farm buildings in agriculture in the county of Nordland. 1 300 buildings were rebuilt or added on to in the same period. It is final figures from the 1999 Agricultural census that shows this.

About half of all the farm buildings were constructed before 1970. 6 900 farm buildings had a total base area of 1.3 million square metres. Almost 350 buildings had all or major parts of the base area out of use. The unused area was 39 000 square metres.

Fewer holdings and increased land rental

The number of holdings with agricultural land in use fell from 5 500 in 1989 to 3 800 in 1999, a reduction of 31 per cent. Agricultural area in use increased in this period by 10 per cent to 580 000 decares. Surface cultivated meadow represented the major part of the total increase. Stricter rules for spreading animal manure and changes in the rules for receiving governmental subsidies are the most important reasons for the area increase not the actual area increase.

The rented area was in 1999 at 226 000 decares and represented 39 per cent of the total area in use In 1989 the rented area was 172 000 decares, 33 per cent. A major part of the rented area was not under any written contract. The area under written contract was rented for at least 5 years. In 1999 the total expenditures for land rental were 6.1 millions NOK, an average expenditure of 54 NOK per decare.

5 200 full time equivalents

All in all, labour input corresponding to 5 200 full-time equivalents was employed in the holdings in Nordland. The total labour input corresponded to one full time equivalent or more for six out of ten holdings. At every fifth holding the labour input was less than a half full time equivalent each.

450 000 decares cultivated meadow

Cultivated meadow for mowing and pasturing represented almost 80 per cent of the 580 000 decares in use. Cultivated meadow more than 10 years of age and meadow between 5 and 9 years of age represented about 30 per cent each of the total cultivated meadow area.

Agricultural training

At more than one out of three holdings in Nordland one or both of the holders had some kind of agricultural training. More men had such education, and most as agronomists, technician or more. It was obviously more holders in 1999 with education as in 1989. Then it was a trained or educated holder at less than every fourth holding.
